Business & Industry

The economy of Zapata County changed significantly during the 20th century. Prior to 1950, ranching and farming were the major economy. Most farms and ranches were family-run operations. In 1919, oil was discovered in the region and soon a commercial oil and gas wells dotted the Zapata County. Drilling in Zapata County centered on the Escobas oilfield surrounding the ranching community known as Laguna de Escobas in northern Zapata County. The Texas Company (TEXACO) became the principal producer in the area and transformed Escobas into essentially a company town, one that served as a supply point for local oil companies.

The county’s present economy is mainly centered on oil and gas production, ranching trade and services, and tourism. Its primary employers are in the mining/energy, construction, retail trade, health care, social welfare, and the service sector. Government is also a major employer in the county.

Zapata County leaders are working together to encourage entrepreneurial development, provide new business incentives, and develop a more highly skilled workforce, key components to the development of a robust and resilient local economy.
